Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, October 6th, 2025

The 20th Annual Buddy Walk will take place in Forsyth Park in Savannah, Ga., on Saturday, Oct. 18, 2025.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the one-mile Buddy Walk at 10:30 a.m. The Family Fun event will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Buddy Walk is a time of celebration and community, raising awareness and support for individuals with Down syndrome. Proceeds from the event benefit programs such as Camp Buddy, summer camps in Effingham and Chatham counties designed to help students retain their skills over the summer break. Funds also support LDSS’s Family Support meetings, new parent packets, and educational opportunities for local families and advocates.

“This event is all about coming together as a community to support and celebrate individuals with Down syndrome,” said Candy Bogardus, president of LDSS. “Every step we take at the Buddy Walk makes a real difference in the lives of families across our region. We encourage everyone to come out, participate, and help us continue our mission.”

Registration for Buddy Walk 2025 is $15. Those who register will receive a Buddy Walk T-shirt. Participants can join an existing team or create their own. https://ldssga.org/buddywalk/

Volunteers are needed to assist with all aspects of the event. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. For more information about becoming a sponsor or volunteering, contact John and Candy Bogardus at [email protected] or 912-663-8573.

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) is an affiliate of the National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS). The Buddy Walk was created by NDSS in 1995 as part of National Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Savannah’s first Buddy Walk took place in 2006, shortly after LDSS was founded. Attendance grew to more than 5,000 people annually until COVID-19 precautions led to virtual events in 2020 and 2021.
