Mayor Pro Tem of Port Wentworth, Gabrielle Nelson, has been recognized by Georgia Trend magazine as one of only 40 people under 40 years of age for being an outstanding community leader. The 38-year-old mother of three was selected from many nominations of individuals living and working in Georgia who are making a difference in the state.

Before her election to the Port Wentworth City Council, Nelson served on the Planning and Zoning Commission, where she gained vital insights into urban development. Now, as Mayor Pro Tem, she advocates for responsible growth, community engagement, and inclusive policy. She has spearheaded several key city initiatives, including the opening of a new technology center, breaking ground on a premier sports complex featuring the Savannah Ghost Pirates training facility, and launching a partnership with Habitat for Humanity to expand housing access. Under her leadership, Port Wentworth earned Georgia Municipal Association (GMA) certifications as both a City of Ethics and a City of Civility.

“Mayor Pro Tem Gabrielle Nelson is a rising star whose integrity, service, and impact on our community is second to none,” said Steve Davis, City Manager. “Her blend of expertise and heart-centered leadership sets her apart as a changemaker across sectors and she models civic engagement in every aspect of her life.”

Nelson's commitment to youth, equity, and community connection is evident in her advocacy for financial literacy and her leadership in organizing the city’s popular “Heart Festivals.” A graduate of the GMA Young Gamechanger program and the Robert E. Knox, Jr. Leadership Institute, she also serves on multiple GMA and nonprofit boards, including CASA, the SAFE Shelter, and the Habersham YMCA. She is a 2024 Leadership Savannah participant and a recipient of the National League of Cities’ Centennial Under 40 Impact Award. In addition to her elected role, Nelson has 16 years of service with Chatham County Government, currently managing IT operations and procurement as Computer Support Manager.
