Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, October 21st, 2025

The Savannah African Art Museum will host a book signing event for From Then Until Now: Short Memoirs of Eight African American Savannahians on Saturday, November 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Museum’s Courtyard, located at 201 East 37th Street. Five of the authors including former Mayor Otis Johnson, Jazz Legend Teddy Adams and Diaspora Marketplace Proprietor, Richard Shinhoster will be signing copies of the book as well as reading excerpts to celebrate the launch of the museum’s “Telling Your Story” Virtual exhibit.

From Then Until Now is a powerful collective memoir from eight African American men, all born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, during Jim Crow and went on to become Savannah’s second African American mayor, educators, veterans, musicians, businessmen and mentors. These stories coincide with the idea behind the museum’s “Telling Your Story” Virtual exhibit. This special exhibit invited community members to share personal or ancestral stories through images, writing, or video, preserving and sharing untold stories acknowledging the depth of the African American experience.

“This event beautifully weaves together the power of storytelling and lived experience,” said Lisa Jackson, Education and Community Outreach Liaison at the Savannah African Art Museum. “Through From Then Until Now and our ‘Telling Your Story’ Virtual exhibit, we’re honoring the voices of Savannah’s African American community seniors and creating space for reflection, connection, awareness, and cultural preservation of the African Diaspora. Every story shared helps strengthen the fabric of our shared history and offers opportunity for enlightenment.”

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved inside the museum with limited seating. The Savannah African Art Museum is a non-profit institution devoted to spreading awareness and appreciation of African culture. They hold a vast collection of objects that hail from West and Central Africa. The museum's collection spans numerous countries and cultures.
