Forget the shovel. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia and local architecture firm Felder & Associates officially began a major renovation and modernization project for the Islands Family YMCA branch today, November 6, 2025, with a ceremonial smashing of a wall instead of a traditional groundbreaking.

Michael Butler, CEO of Optim Orthopedics, Brian Felder, President of Felder & Associates, Joel Smoker, President/CEO of YMCA of Coastal Georgia, Pat Farrell, Chatham County Commissioner of District 4, Houstoun Demere, Board Chair of Corporate Board of Directors, Matt West, President of West Construction Company wielded sledgehammers to demolish a section of the wall at the facility, located at 66 Johnny Mercer Blvd., signaling the start of construction. The highly visual event marks the next phase in the YMCA’s system-wide effort to upgrade its coastal Georgia facilities.

The comprehensive project, designed by Felder & Associates, is focused on meeting the evolving needs of the Islands community, ensuring the branch remains a vital hub for healthy living, youth development, and social responsibility for decades to come.

The renovation will add 3,000 square feet of space and deliver a complete interior modernization, bringing new features and enhanced amenities to members:
Optim Ortho Space: A dedicated 3,000-square-foot Rehab Center staffed with rehabilitation specialists.
Enhanced Wellness: New, dedicated studios for yoga and cycling, along with a new post-workout recovery room.
Modern Accessibility: Modernized locker rooms and the future introduction of 24-hour fitness center access options.
Youth Engagement: Significantly expanded areas for children and teens, including an expanded Child Watch area and a cutting-edge Teen Tech Lab.
Community Connection: A reimagined, welcoming lobby designed to foster relaxation and social connection.

Brian Felder of Felder & Associates emphasized the design's focus on functionality and community connection. "The updated facility is intentionally designed to serve the Islands community better, offering modern amenities while retaining the spirit of community the YMCA embodies," said Felder.

YMCA leadership affirmed that the renovation underscores the organization's commitment to providing the resources necessary for youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

The project is now officially underway, promising to deliver a modernized, high-quality community center for the Islands area.
