Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, January 9th, 2026

The Savannah Council on World Affairs has announced its lineup of speakers for the second half of the current academic year. The year got off to a strong start with international trade expert Dr. Brad Setser of the Council on Foreign Relations on January 15 reviewing the impact of the current trade war between the U.S. and China, and whether recent developments amount to “de-globalizing.”

Upcoming program topics range from Iran and regional security issues to critical minerals and their impact on U.S. security and prosperity. The schedule appears below, and additional information will be announced on each speaker as the meeting dates approach.

The meetings and their speakers are scheduled as follows.

February 19 – Jonathan Panikoff, director of the Scowcroft Middle East Security Initiative within the Atlantic Council, will discuss Iran and regional security issues.

March 19 – Laird Treiber, lecturer on African Studies at George Washington University and director of trade and investment programs at the Corporate Council on Africa, speaking on US-Africa economic relations.

April 16 – Dan Blumenthal, Senior Fellow of the American Enterprise Institute, will discuss China, Taiwan, and US-China relations.

May 21 – Gracelin Baskaran, Director of the Critical Minerals Security Program, Center for Strategic and International Studies, will discuss Critical Minerals and US Security and Prosperity.

Details of the monthly meetings occasionally vary due to scheduling concerns, but can always be found at the organization’s website, savannahcwa.org. A summary of typical details follows.

Savannah Council on World Affairs Speaker Events feature a variety of dynamic speakers drawn from past and present diplomatic, military, and other government positions, academia, think tanks, and other first-hand participants and observers of international affairs.

Meetings are typically, but not exclusively, held from 7 to 9 p.m. on the third Thursday of the months of the academic year. Attendees are encouraged to consult the website, savannahcwa.org, for confirmation.

A recurring venue is the Coastal Georgia Center, located at 305 Fahm Street in downtown Savannah, though meetings are occasionally held elsewhere.

Topics cover a broad range of issues drawn from current headlines in politics, economics, security, and other international concerns.

Programs are free for Savannah Council on World Affairs members and cost $20 for the general public. Full-time students, faculty, and active-duty military may attend for free.
