The City of Port Wentworth has received federal funding of $1.75 million to upgrade water and sewer infrastructure in this fast-growing region of Chatham County. President Trump ratified the 2026 funding for Port Wentworth which came through the House-passed Commerce, Justice, Science; Energy and Water Development; and Interior and Environment Appropriations Act.
Mayor Pro-Tem Gabrielle Nelson commented, “Port Wentworth’s rapid growth, driven by strong economic development, makes it vital that we upgrade our aging water and sewer systems while mitigating flood risks—especially in our downtown area. Securing federal funding allows us to accelerate these critical infrastructure improvements and continue supporting the residents and businesses that choose Port Wentworth as a place to live, experience, and thrive.”
Congressman Buddy Carter championed this allocation of federal funding to improve services for residents and to ensure that Port Wentworth has the appropriate infrastructure to support continuing economic growth. “We are grateful for the federal government’s investment in the Port Wentworth community,” said Mayor Tracy Saunders. “We appreciate Congressman Carter’s for his commitment in helping secure this significant funding. These resources will allow us to strengthen critical infrastructure, improve system reliability, enhance flood mitigation efforts, and support the responsible growth of our city. Most importantly, this investment helps us protect the long-term well-being of our residents while continuing to elevate the quality of life across our community.”
