Savannah African Art Museum Announces New Rotating Exhibit and Event in February
Friday, February 27th, 2026
The Savannah African Art Museum is proud to announce its upcoming exhibition, "Roots and Rituals: Agriculture and Spirituality in the West African Interior," running from February 2026 through January 2027. This curated collection explores the delicate bargain struck between farmers and the spiritual world within the West African savanna and forest regions.
Focusing specifically on agricultural practices in Burkina Faso and Mali, the exhibition highlights how communities in the Western Sudan region navigate unpredictable terrains. In these cosmologies, the wilderness serves as the inverse of culture—a realm beyond human control that is simultaneously dangerous and a source of profound wisdom and sustenance. Visitors will journey through the three realms of African society. The physical realm is the orderly, governed world of domesticated animals and cultivated fields. The spiritual realm is the unseen forces governing the natural world. The In-Between is the space where festivals, ceremonies, and agricultural societies harness the power of the bush.
"The Savannah African Art Museum strives to educate the community on the beauty and history of African Art," states Alisa Evans-Newsome, Executive Director of the Museum, “We are thrilled to introduce this immersive experience, and we hope the public loves it as much as we do.” The exhibition features selected artifacts from the museum's permanent collection, illustrating how these ancient beliefs are translated into visible forms and social experiences.
The museum is also excited to host a special event, "Houston Tales" with Adrienne Reynolds on February 28 from 2 to 3 pm. This event will demonstrate history in an interactive environment with an outstanding host. Adrienne Reynolds is a gifted storyteller, singer, and actress, with the ability to inspire and engage all ages in the West African, Griot tradition of storytelling. Adrienne’s singing, energy, and passion bring these meaningful stories to life.
