Savannah Technical College Students to Host Free Walk for Child Abuse Prevention and Autism Acceptance Months

In recognition of National Child Abuse Prevention Month and Autism Acceptance Month this April, the Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) Club at Savannah Technical College (Savannah Tech) are taking the lead to host the 5th Annual Child Abuse and Autism Awareness Fun-Day & Walk on Saturday, April 18. This free event invites local residents to "Step Out & Make a Difference," connecting families with vital educational resources while raising awareness.
The event runs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Savannah Tech main campus (5717 White Bluff Rd., Savannah, Ga.). Attendees are directed to enter the campus exclusively through the Hampstead Avenue entrance.
Embracing the theme "Be a Child's Sunshine," organizers encourage all participants to wear blue. Blue serves as the official color for both Child Abuse Prevention Month and Autism Acceptance Month, symbolizing a community-wide commitment to child safety, understanding, and support.
Registration and a community vendor fair open at 9:30 a.m. The official walk kicks off with an opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m., featuring remarks from ECCE Program Chair Mrs. Grant before the ribbon cutting.
Organized entirely by Savannah Tech students, the event is free to attend and focuses strictly on awareness and education rather than fundraising. Along the route, participants will find educational facts regarding child abuse prevention and autism, while vendors will distribute resources to help adults practice positive parenting.
Showcasing the power of Georgia technical education, Savannah Tech Barbering students will be on-site providing free haircuts—putting their skills into action to give back. They join community partners including the Live Oak Public Library, Drivers Education, and the Coastal GA Coalition for Children.
The walk showcases strong grassroots growth driven by student initiative. Originally launched in 2020 by Grant and the ECCE Club with just 50 attendees, the event expanded to over 200 participants by 2024. Returning after a one-year hiatus, this year’s walk aims to re-engage the community and reach even more families.
