Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society to Host JOY Prom on May 8th

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, April 15th, 2026

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) will host JOY Prom Savannah 2026 on May 8, an inclusive event for individuals with Down syndrome and ALL different abilities. Event time is from 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Held annually since 2010, JOY Prom provides a structured, accessible environment where participants can socialize, build confidence and engage in a traditional prom experience that is often not otherwise available.

All participants and volunteers must register in advance by visiting LDSSGA.org and selecting the JOY Prom banner.

Participants must be at least 16 years old. Each participant is paired with a volunteer “buddy,” also age 16 or older, who provides one-on-one support throughout the evening. Buddies are required to arrive by 5 p.m. for orientation, with pairings beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Volunteers will primarily serve as buddies but are also needed for additional roles, including event check-in, red carpet greeting, food and beverage service, swag bag distribution, and event setup and cleanup.

“JOY Prom is more than just a dance, it’s an opportunity for participants to feel celebrated, build confidence, and connect with our community in a way that is safe, fun, and unforgettable,” said Candy Bogardus, LDSS volunteer coordinator and LDSS President. “Every volunteer, every buddy, helps make that night truly special.”

The event will include dinner, music, dancing and activity stations.

The event is supported by Savannah AMBUCS and other community partners.
