Chatham County to Spend $1.8M Restoring Storm-Damaged McQueen’s Island Trail

Chatham County leaders are moving forward with a $1.8 million project to restore parts of the McQueen’s Island Trail, a historic route repeatedly damaged by major storms.
County commissioners approved the spending to address erosion and washouts along the trail, which officials say worsened after hurricanes — including Hurricane Helene in 2024 — tore through coastal Georgia.
“This is how people got to Tybee years ago before there was a road and a bridge,” said Commissioner Brian Hussey, who represents District 4.
