Hope Haven, a faith-based respite program serving individuals living with dementia and other cognitive impairments, is celebrating its special partnership with The Children’s School at St. John’s Church (CSSJ), an intergenerational connection that brings enrichment to participants of all ages.

Both programs are housed in Cranmer Hall, making regular visits easy to coordinate. Throughout the year, CSSJ students visit the day program to share holiday celebrations, exchange valentines, and welcome visits from Santa Claus, St. Patrick, and even a miniature pony from Minis 2 Love. These visits are packed with energy, featuring hands-on activities like playing beneath a giant colorful parachute held high by members. The children also treat members to lively performances, dressing as pilgrims on a Mayflower voyage and transforming into clowns and circus animals for an end-of-year carnival. These joyful interactions create an atmosphere where laughter, curiosity, and meaningful connections flourish across generations.

“Watching our members and the children engage is truly special,” said Martha Sullivan. “This year’s graduating class has been visiting since they were just 3, and nothing beats watching them walk in to greet our members with big hugs. The children don’t see a diagnosis of dementia — they simply see adults who are excited to love them and have fun.”

The Children’s School at St. John’s Church is a loving and nurturing preschool and mother’s morning out program serving children ages 3 months through prekindergarten. Dedicated to cultivating well-rounded, lifelong learners, the school’s mission aligns seamlessly with Hope Haven’s commitment to fostering purpose, dignity, and connection.

With the CSSJ school year recently concluding, Hope Haven extends heartfelt congratulations to this year’s graduating students and their families. The members of Hope Haven look forward to welcoming the younger students back in August to continue the cherished tradition.

“I am deeply grateful for the opportunity my child has to interact with Hope Haven members,” said CSSJ parent Kate Stanton Melendez. “As a Hope Haven volunteer, I have the unique privilege of seeing the positive effect these interactions have on both the children and the members. Seeing the joy on everyone’s faces is beautiful, and the connection enriches both programs.”

Hope Haven is currently welcoming new families to the program and seeking passionate volunteers to join its mission. At the same time, The Children’s School at St. John’s Church is accepting student applications for the upcoming school year.
