Historic Savannah Foundation Now Accepting Nominations for 2026 Endangered Places List

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Tuesday, June 9th, 2026

Historic Savannah Foundation (HSF) is thrilled to announce that nominations are currently being accepted for HSF’s 2026 Endangered Places list. This local advocacy initiative, which debuted in 2025, is modeled after the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation’s Places in Peril program and is designed to raise awareness about endangered buildings, provide helpful resources and encourage community involvement in local preservation efforts.

“Historic preservation is not just about saving buildings,” said Historic Savannah Foundation Director of Preservation Kaylee Johnson. “It’s also about bringing awareness and protection to endangered places that are associated with memory, identity and stories that communities cannot afford to lose. This program strives to do just that.”

The HSF Endangered Places Program seeks to identify, advocate and preserve historic sites threatened by demolition, neglect, lack of maintenance, inappropriate development or insensitive public policy within Savannah’s city limits. The list helped raise awareness about Savannah’s significant historic, vernacular, archaeological and cultural resources, including but not limited to buildings, structures, districts and archaeological sites.

The criteria for HSF’s 2026 Endangered Places list are as follows:

  • Sites must be at least 50 years old and have local importance in terms of architectural, cultural and/or historic significance.
  • Sites could be of significance in relation to notable people, events or activities associated with a broad pattern of history.
  • Sites do not have to be listed in a historic district to be eligible.
  • Sites must be subject to a serious threat to their existence or historical, architectural and/or archaeological integrity.
  • There must be a demonstrable level of community commitment and support for the preservation of the nominated site.

To nominate a building, site or resource, visit myhsf.org/what-we-do/endangered-places and complete the online nomination form or download the PDF at the same link and email the completed form to [email protected].
