The City of Savannah celebrates being named a 2025 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

The special recognition was bestowed upon the Hostess City of the South in April in honor of a commitment to plant, grow, and maintain trees to benefit the community. The City was informed of the award in late May.

Here in Savannah, we love our trees.

“This acknowledgment aligns with our goal for Savannah to be a safe, environmentally healthy, and economically thriving community for all,” said Mayor Van R. Johnson, II. “We know trees and green spaces are life, give life, and contribute to the overall quality of living for our citizens.”

Savannah accepts this outstanding achievement as the Arbor Day Foundation celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Tree City USA program. Its network of over a million supporters and partners has helped the organization plant more than 500 million trees in forests and communities across more than 60 countries.

“By prioritizing tree stewardship, you’ve not only helped enhance Savannah’s livability but also you’ve invested in a healthier, more sustainable future for your residents,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

Earning Tree City USA recognition means a city upholds four core standards: maintain a tree board department; possess a community tree ordinance; spend at least $2 per capita on urban forestry; and participate in an Arbor Day celebration.

According to the Arbor Day Foundation, “in cities and neighborhoods, trees are proven to help mitigate the urban heat island effect, reduce stormwater runoff, improve air quality, and boost mental and physical health. When the right trees are planted in the right places, they can also reduce traffic noise, increase property values, and lower energy costs for homeowners.”
