The South Carolina Department of Transportation in partnership with local counties, municipalities, and partner agencies celebrated the improvement of more than 700 crosswalks across the Lowcountry.

They said it’s part of a regional pedestrian safety initiative during a ribbon cutting ceremony in North Charleston on Friday, August 7.

“We are here today because of our strong partnerships in the Lowcountry and I want to thank everyone that helped us make these improvements a reality. One death on our roadways is too many, and at SCDOT our number one priority is improving safety for every single person in our state,” Deputy Secretary for Engineering Rob Perry said. “This is just one more example of the work we are doing to make safer roads a reality in South Carolina.”

The new installations and upgrades were designed to enhance accessibility and safety for pedestrians throughout Beaufort, Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton, Dorchester, and Jasper counties.
