Historic St. John’s Church to Hold Service Honoring Savannah’s First Responders

St. John’s Church (Episcopal) on Madison Square will hold a special service of Choral Evensong at 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, celebrating the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels, commonly known as Michaelmas, and honoring the first responders who serve the city and community of Savannah.
St. Michael has long been associated with those who protect and serve, making the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels a fitting occasion to recognize Savannah’s first responders. The annual service will offer a time of prayer, thanksgiving, and remembrance for those who serve our community, as well as for first responders who have died in the line of duty or in retirement during the past year.
Evensong is a service of evening prayer characterized by choral music, Scripture, and quiet reflection. The service will be sung by the St. John’s Choir of Girls and Schola Choir and will last approximately 40 minutes. The service is free and open to the public.
A free-will offering will be collected during the service, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire, which provides financial assistance to the surviving spouses and children of first responders who lose their lives in the line of duty.
“St. John’s Church was founded in 1841 to serve the community of Savannah, and it is especially appropriate that we take time to thank and remember the first responders who serve and protect our community,” said William Douglas, Organist and Choirmaster of St. John’s Church.
Following the service, a reception will be held in the Mall area between St. John’s Church and the Green-Meldrim House. The reception will include food, games, and opportunities for members of the community to meet and thank local first responders for their service. A fire truck is also expected to be present, and first responders will offer helpful demonstrations and reminders about what to do—and what not to do—in emergency situations.
