Dr. George Washington "Pinned" by His Wife at a Ceremony to Welcome Him as Chief of BOEPD

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, October 29th, 2026

George Washington: Today, I accept the responsibility of serving as your chief of police,  Board of Education Police Department.

Dr. Denise Watts: We are proud to serve alongside you and excited about the future that is ahead.

Ken Slats: The future ahead will be led by a 30-year veteran of law enforcement, military, strategic planning and executive leadership.

George Washington: We will become better through disciplined people, making disciplined decisions consistently and professionally. Day after day, school after school, student after student. I look at us as being a little bit stronger than your regular street police officer. Not that that's negative, but because of all of the training that we put in to be really good mentors, teachers, coaches in the public school system.

David Gay: Your badge is a reminder of your responsibility to the 35,000 students in 5600 employees of the district, wear it with pride and honor.

Dr. Denise Watts: It's a symbol of trust. It represents a commitment to service, to responsibility, to sacrifice, and to leadership. We recognize not only the office that Chief Washington will assume, but also the character, the dedication and the vision that has prepared him for this special moment.

Ken Slats: Chief Washington cherishes the challenge. His vision fits right in with the district's new strategic plan.

Dr. Denise Watts: Unlimited Possibilities can only flourish when our students feel safe. Safety is the foundation upon which we build every opportunity.

George Washington: It could be operational excellence. It could be other areas of the plan. And so we fit in and we pick out those areas that are important to the district, and we indulge ourselves in it. We make it better whether we need to train to be able to do something better. That's what we do. But that creates the Unlimited Possibilities for our students, for our staff, and we can grow this district tremendously.

Ken Slats: Congratulations to our new police chief, Dr. George Washington. Reporting for SCCPSS, I'm Ken Slats.
