Georgia Power Continues Coastal Grid Enhancement Work With Upgrade to Tybee Island Infrastructure

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, October 14th, 2026

As part of an ongoing effort in Coastal Georgia to strengthen and reinforce the grid, Georgia Power will begin a major project to upgrade powerlines and poles on Tybee Island, improving reliability and increasing the storm resiliency of infrastructure serving thousands of customers on the island.

The project will strengthen the existing power delivery system by replacing select poles with a mix of wood, modular composite, and self-supporting concrete to better withstand high winds and severe weather. Power lines will also be upgraded to improve service and enhance reliability. The project is focused on reinforcing existing infrastructure and does not expand the electric grid on Tybee Island.

The first phase of the project is scheduled to begin within the next week and will focus on the south end of the island. Areas where work will take place include Butler Ave. from 6th St. to 18th and power lines along connecting streets. Work will also happen along Inlet Ave. and Chatham Ave. This phase is scheduled to be completed in January of 2027.

The project’s second phase will tentatively begin in early November on the northeast side of the island focused on infrastructure along and near 2nd Ave., Wrenwood Dr., Solomon Ave., Van Horne Ave., Pulaski St. and Meddin Dr. The second phase is expected to be completed by February of 2027.

Georgia Power and its contract crews will work along roads and in the right-of-way. Crews will aim to minimize disruptions. During construction drivers are urged to use caution around active work areas. When possible, motorists should move over one lane for utility vehicles working on the side of the road, per Georgia’s Move Over Law.

Customers in the affected area will receive advance notifications by mail and email with project details, potential impacts and how to contact Georgia Power. Once work is completed, crews will restore the area to its original condition.

Georgia Power remains committed to delivering safe, clean, affordable, and reliable energy for customers on Tybee every day. All along the Georgia coast, Georgia Power continues to strengthen, expand, and reinforce the electrical grid infrastructure that delivers energy every day to customers with projects currently underway and planned for the future.
