Armstrong State University’s College of Education recently announced plans to partner with the Savannah Chatham County Public School System to establish a Professional Development School initiative at Hesse K-8 School.
The first of other Professional Development Schools to come, this partnership will create a learning environment that benefits from a shared research focus, improved teacher preparation, enhanced professional development and support for practicing teachers. While this initiative seeks to enhance the skills of professional educators, the continued professional development activities also support improved student achievement.
“Armstrong and Hesse K8 School will engage in shared responsibility for improving teacher education and student achievement,” says Armstrong College of Education Dean Janet Buckenmeyer. “This is a great opportunity for College of Education students to gain real-world classroom skills and for Armstrong to establish a strong presence in the Pre-K through 12 community.”
Both SCCPSS and Armstrong recognize the value and importance of lifelong learning where refined teaching practices support better outcomes for all students.
“This collaborative effort supports our work across the school system,” said Dr. Ann Levett, SCCPSS Chief Academic Officer. “It represents a shared commitment and furthers the high-quality educational experience we strive to offer in every classroom across the school district.”
The partnership will be implemented over the next three years with Armstrong Assistant Professors Kathie Fabrikant and Ardyth Foster and Hesse teachers Sara Doubleday and Michelle Barrett serving as liaisons. Additional participating teachers will soon be selected. Armstrong internship students will be placed in the school for unique co-teaching field experiences.
