A Beachside Turtle-Hatching Experience: Ossabaw Island Loggerhead Turtle Overnight Trip is August 7-9, 2015

Spend two nights on Ossabaw Island on the Georgia coast; look for adult nesting turtles at night, and at daybreak witness baby loggerhead turtles emerge from their beachside nests and make their way to the ocean.

Itinerary: Depart Friday, August 7, 4:30pm from Delegal Creek Marina on Skidaway Island, just outside of Savannah. After a 30-minute boat ride across Ossabaw Sound, arrive on Ossabaw Island in time for social hour, followed by supper and an evening program that includes an island overview, Stay up late or take a short nap, then venture out on the back of a pickup truck for a late night truck ride to Ossabaw Island's beach, escorted by naturalist guide John "Crawfish" Crawford to look for any late season nesting turtles.  The next morning watch and assist the turtle biologists in their monitoring work, and learn about the life cycle of the turtles from a nest-side vantage point.  With luck and good timing, observe some hatchlings emerge and make their way to the water.

Saturday, spend a relaxing day on Ossabaw Island, hiking or touring with the naturalists, or napping.  That night, the group makes another pass at the beach in hopes of seeing turtles. No guarantees to see turtles, but a guarantee of a rewarding island experience. Sleep in on Sunday, then return to the mainland late morning.
