Savannah Nonprofit Uses Community Olympic Day to Engage Students in Summer Learning

For Heart Sake, a Savannah nonprofit working to enrich the lives of school-age children in resource-limited communities, presents Community Olympic Day on Saturday, June 26from 8:00am - 12:00 at Savannah State University.  During the event, 1000 2nd-5th grade students from 21st Century Community Learning Centers throughout the Savannah-Chatham School system will rotate through stations to experience international cultural traditions and sports.

Learning is a life long process. For Heart Sake is teaching children this important message elementary schoolers through their summer program. “Community Olympic Day is a culmination celebration for our collaborative summer camp with 21st Century CLC. This event is about engaging the community and widening children’s horizons,” said Timothy King, Executive Director of For Heart Sake. “Learning about new cultures – and in the process, about each other - is a great way to engage and educate our youth.”

Stations will be themed after Australia, Brazil, China, Greece, Liberia, and Mexico. During the rotation, students will get to interact with natives from the perspective countries and partake in games you can only find in certain parts of the world.
