SCI Celebrates Summer Angels Student Volunteers With Recognition Ceremony on Aug. 7th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, July 28th, 2015

SCI (Senior Citizens, Inc.) will recognize their Summer Angels, students from local schools who volunteered over their summer break, with a reception for the students and their guests on Friday, August 7, 2015 at 10 a.m.

The Summer Angels program of SCI matches middle-school aged students with seniors at various levels of need and in a variety of situations. The program helps meet the needs of seniors and provides a life-changing experience for the kids. This summer, under the supervision of Catherine Richie, a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School, 24 students provided more than 1,000 hours of assistance.

The students have delivered meals to Meals on Wheels recipients, played games and made crafts with seniors at adult daytime care centers and neighborhood centers, and led exercises and games at Azalealand Nursing Home. They also cleaned up the outdoor area at the Ruth Byck Adult Daytime Care Center and set up a quiet room at that facility. In a nutshell, they helped carry out the mission of SCI: to help people age successfully.

At the recognition ceremony, these exceptional students will be presented with a commemorative letter from Mayor Edna Jackson honoring their volunteer efforts, as well as a certificate of completion. A slide show of highlights from the program will be shown and refreshments will be served.
