Starland Fashion Night at the First Friday Art March - October 2nd

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, September 11th, 2015

Art Rise Savannah is excited to announce Starland Fashion Night during the 42nd First Friday Art March on October 2nd from 6 to 9PM in the Starland Arts District. Starland Fashion Night will highlight a series of exhibitions and workshops focused on sustainable fashion and local design.

Art Rise Savannah is also excited to announce a reimagining of our core event, the Starland Arts Festival. The new hub of the First Friday Art March will be held at the park on 41st Street between Bull and Drayton, right next to Starland Cafe. For October, the Starland Arts Festival will host multiple interactive events including DISPOSABLE, STAINability, music from Twisty Cats, and a pop-up shop from soon to be open, House of Strut.

In a nod to Warhol’s paper dresses, DISPOSABLE features garments made by local designers  with recycled Connect Savannah newspapers. The exhibit highlights the creativity of Savannah’s fashion community while drawing attention to the need for sustainable reforms in the garment industry.

“DISPOSABLE highlights the creativity of local designers to our community,” says Nathan Saludez, Fashion Director of Art Rise Savannah. “It takes the original ‘wear once and throw away’ concept of the paper dress and turns it on it’s head.”

STAINability, a hands-on demonstration led by SCAD Fibers alum Courtney Crews, will teach attendees simple methods to sustainably dye fabrics at home. Learn how to freshen up your wardrobe for fall by simply saving your onion peels and avocado skins.

Twisty Cats, Blake and Peter Mavrogeorgis of Dollhouse Studios, will be spinning classic vinyl all night, encouraging attendees to dance and groove while perusing the racks of House of Strut’s pop up shop. In addition live sketching stations will be setup throughout the park, with materials provided by Starlandia Creative Supply.

As always, guests can hop on the free trolley to visit multiple event locations spread throughout the Starland District. More information on the participating locations will be announced soon.
