Costumed interpreters, a garden tea party, lessons in spinning thread, embroidery, bread making, and faux finish painting, along with games of marbles and croquet are all part of the Free Family Day at the Owens-Thomas House on September 12 from 1-4 p.m.

Located at 124 Abercorn Street, the Telfair Museums’ Owens-Thomas House is Savannah’s most popular historic home with guided tours offered most days of the year. However, this family event, offered free of charge, provides a special experience for visitors of all ages to learn more about the people who visited, lived and worked in the home throughout its more than 200-year history.

The mansion was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1976, and stands today as a remarkable example of early nineteenth century Regency-style architecture. Designed by architect William Jay, the home features period furnishings dating from 1790-1840, revolutionary technology for its time, an English garden and a rare two-story urban slave quarters. Additionally it carries the stories of its former inhabitants, the Richardson and the Owens families.

“Guests of the Free Family Day are invited to explore history at the extraordinary Owens-Thomas house while enjoying games, activities and crafts,” said Shannon Browning-Mullis, Telfair Museums’ assistant curator of history and lead interpreter. “Families will be escorted through the main floor of the house to learn about its rooms and the lifestyle of early 19th century Savannahians. Eight different costumed interpreters acting as real historical figures of the period will provide information and lead activities throughout the house. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn about entertaining etiquette with a garden tea party, spinning thread, embroidery, bread making, faux finish painting, and games of marbles.

All of Telfair Museums’ Family Days, scheduled throughout the year, are designed to be fun and educational and are always free. Participants enjoy hands-on art projects, gallery exploration activities, story time, and many more activities designed to engage the whole family.

All Free Family Days are free and open to the public thanks to the sponsorship of the City of Savannah’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Georgia Power Foundation, Inc.
