Dr. Armitage Visit to The Greenery this Saturday

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Wednesday, November 11th, 2015

It’s not often that gardeners get to rub elbows with a world renowned plant expert, but your chance is this Saturday, Nov. 14 at 2 p.m. at The Greenery, 960 William Hilton Pkwy, Hilton Head Island. Dr. Allan Armitage is a writer, researcher and speaker, known by gardeners all over the world. He has written 13 books, countless academic papers and hundreds of articles, including a monthly column for the national greenhouse publication, “Greenhouse Grower” for over 30 years.

Armitage is a Professor of Horticulture at the University of Georgia, where he teaches research and runs the University of Georgia Horticulture Gardens—producing annual guidelines for annuals and perennials. His evaluations of plants for the Southeastern climate are followed by the plant industry, and his opinion often determines which plants become national best sellers.

Several of his books are used as reference and teaching texts around the world. His accomplishments include the Medal of Honor from the Garden Club of America, and he was recognized as one of the best teachers in the nation when he received the distinguished National Educator Award from the American Horticultural Society.

With all his notoriety, you’ll find that his southern charm, his sweat-stained iconic Tilley hat, and the garden dirt under his nails make him entirely approachable with your gardening questions.

Along with answering your toughest gardening questions, Armitage will be signing copies of his most recent book, a memoir of his life in the garden. The book, It’s Not Just About The Hat – the Unlikely Journey of a Plantsman, exemplifies everything you have learned to expect from one of the most engaging storytellers today.  From digging graves to braving North Atlantic storms, his stories depict his unlikely trajectory as a shy boy from a quiet neighborhood of Montreal to a world renowned plant expert.

There is no cost to attend the event, but due to his popularity, we suggest you get there early. For more information about the event, contact Jamie Harrison (843)785-3848.
