Savannah Children's Choir Presents 2015 Artist in Residence

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Wednesday, November 4th, 2015

As part of their 10th anniversary season, the Savannah Children’s Choir presents their annual Artist in Residence program the week of November 9, 2015, which culminates in a performance, Night at the Opera, on Saturday, November 15, 2015.

The week kicks off with an Open Rehearsal on Monday, November 9 from 5-7 p.m. at the Savannah Arts Academy Performance Hall, 500 Washington Avenue. Keith Miller, bass/baritone, will work with the Savannah Children’s Choir on their music for the upcoming Night at the Opera, perform for, and host a master class with the SCC’s five choirs.  The Open Rehearsal is free and open to the public.

During the week, Miller will visit six local schools, and work with children ranging from elementary to high school to college students.  Each group will learn an opera chorus that they’ll then be invited to join in and perform at Night at the Opera on Saturday, November 14 at 7 p.m. at the Lucas Theatre.

Miller, who is also Guest Artistic Director of Night at the Opera, will conclude the week’s residence with an assembled group of top opera stars who are donating their time and talents to put on a concert to benefit the Savannah Children’s Choir’s travel scholarship fund.  “As an artist, I believe in the importance of the Savannah Children’s Choir.  I see firsthand the work it does with young singers, and wish I had had something similar in my community when I was a child,” comments Miller.

Miller was an important reason this year’s opera event was restructured, according to SCC co-founder Cuffy Sullivan.  “He helped us realize that we’d been gearing our annual “Night” event, now in its fifth year, to those already familiar with opera, but that it would be even better to gear it towards children and their families so they could enjoy this unique art form together,” she commented.

“Thanks to our sponsors Jim Daly, Mary & Howard Morrison, Austin Hill Realty, and with support from Don & Kaye Kole, Shelby Schavoir and Ricky Patel, the event will be held at the Lucas Theatre, with family-friendly pricing for all,” comments Roger Moss, SCC co-founder.  “Children and student tickets are only $5!” exclaimed Moss.

General admission adult tickets are $20 or $25, and reserved seating is $75.

The program, featuring Miller as bass/baritone, Melissa Zapin, soprano, Sandra Piques-Eddy, mezzo-soprano, Alok Kumar, tenor and Igor Vieira, baritone, will cover the “greatest hits” of opera.  “Rock Star” pianist (and 2014 SCC Artist in Residence) Konstantin Soukhovetski will accompany the singers.

The 7 p.m. concert will be preceded by a 6:30 p.m. Artists’ Talk where audience members can get to know the artists before the concert.
