Wednesday, January 20th, 2016

Savannah, did you know that honey bees are responsible for pollinating 1/3 of the food we consume?  Think of a world without such things as apples, almonds, strawberries, etc.  Not only humans, but all animals depend on such pollinators for food!  Spring is just around the corner so catch the buzz in time for the spring nectar season!  Come learn more about these fascinating and critically important insects and how you can legally start your own bee hive in Savannah. The FUNdamentals of Beekeeping is sponsored by the Coastal Empire Beekeepers Association and will address both novice and experienced beekeepers in a variety of hands-on and lecture format classes. Experience a full day of learning about honeybees, what to expect, and what is legal in Chatham County.

On Saturday, February 27th from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. participants will learn about the fascinating world of honeybees and the art of hobbyist beekeeping.  Classroom training covers bee biology, installing package bees, colony management, equipment required, and so much more.  Students will also be given a special opportunity to visit the apiary at Oatland, weather permitting.  The cost is $50 per person which includes lunch and the book “First Lessons in Beekeeping” by the head of UGA’s Honey Bee Program, Dr. Keith Delaplane. The program will be open to anyone age 12 and older.  Program details can be found at www.cebeekeeping.com.
