Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, January 15th, 2016

The Telluride Mountainfilm on Tour in Savannah will take place January 20-23, 2016 throughout downtown historic Savannah, screening over 30 films throughout the three-day festival. The festival will kick off on Wednesday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Trustees Theater with the local premiere of Racing Extinction, a recent film by Academy Award-winning director Louie Psihoyos.

Louie Psihoyos has created a monumental piece of film cinematography regarding the future of our planet. Louie will be present for the film screening and a post-film discussion, where he will engage the audience on the making of this acclaimed movie and also on the environmental issues covered in the film. Cast member Leilani Munter, an environmental activist and professional race car driver, will also be in attendance during the screening and Q&A session. The Discovery Channel’s Planet Green has recognized Leilani as the #1 Eco Athlete in the world.

Preceding the film, enlarged projections of endangered indigenous wildlife will swim across SCAD Jen Library in a beautiful dance of photography and sound beginning at 6:00 p.m. During this presentation, electric automobiles will be exhibited along Broughton Street.

All film screenings at the festival highlight Telluride Mountainfilm on Tour Savannah’s mission of educating, inspiring, and motivating audiences on issues that matter, cultures worth exploring, environments worth preserving, and conversations worth having. Films featured in this year’s festival include The Reinvention of Normal, Knee Deep, and The Fisherman’s Son, in addition to many more adventure seeking films that speak to man’s indomitable spirit. What’s Motivating Hayes will screen Friday with Dr. Tyrone Hayes participating in a discussion following the film about reprisals from a chemical corporation after his research discovered that the chemical it was using was hazardous to wildlife. Saturday evening Jedidiah Jenkins and Kenny Laubbacher will present their film The Thousand Year Journey. This film documents Jenkins’ trek from Oregon to Patagonia.

Festival events will be held at the Trustees Theater, 216 East Broughton Street, starting each night at 7:00 p.m. A family matinee will also take place at the Trustees Theater on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Other festival events include a coffee talk with visiting filmmakers at Kennedy Pharmacy on Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. followed by a bike ride through downtown historic Savannah in conjunction with the Savannah Bicycle Campaign.
