A number of celebrations featuring music and dance will be held through the Savannah Black Heritage Festival in February.

The highlight of the dance events is the performance of the renowned Lula Washington Dance Theatre on Friday, February 5, 7:30 p.m., at the Johnny Mercer Theatre, 301 Oglethorpe Ave. Washington’s works have been commissioned by major foundations and dance presenting institutions, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the James Irvine Foundation, the Ford Foundation, and AT&T. Free tickets to this performance are required. Tickets can be obtained at the Savannah Civic Center box office, Lester’s Florist on Bull and 37th streets, and Cumulus Broadcasting Company on Television Circle beginning Thursday, January 21 on a first-come-first-served basis. There is a limit of four tickets per patron. Unclaimed seats will be released 10 minutes prior to curtain time. The event is presented in part by Gulfstream, Georgia Power, Carver State Bank and South State Bank.

The Lula Washington Dance Theatre will also take part in workshops throughout the city. A community dance workshop and master class will be held Wednesday, February 3, 5:30 p.m. Space is limited. Washington will hold a public conversation about the influence of African-American culture on dance on Thursday, February 4, 6:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church, 421 Habersham St.

This year’s annual School Day Extravaganza, for students grades 4-8, will also feature Washington’s dance troupe. Musical celebrations and concerts will also be taking place throughout the month. The Annual Future of Jazz Concert features local and regional young jazz vocalists and instrumentalists and is performed in tribute to jazz great Ben Tucker. The concert will be held Wednesday, February 10, 7 p.m., at the Jewish Education Alliance, 5111 Abercorn St. The event is presented in part by the Jewish Education Alliance, Seacrest Partners and AT&T.

This year’s annual gospel concert will feature Wess Morgan. The singer and preacher has four albums and appeared in Tyler Perry’s “Laugh To Keep From Crying.” The concert will begin with opening performances from Savannah State University’s Wesleyan and Armstrong State University’s Gospel choirs. Sunday, February 14, 5 p.m., First African Baptist Church, 23 Montgomery St. Presented in part by LifeLink of Georgia.

The Ugandan Kids Choir is an outreach project from Childcare Worldwide. Each choir is made up of 10 sponsored children who come from the poorest parts of Uganda. Their concert, sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Savannah Alumnae Chapter, will be held at the St. Paul CME Church, 1601 Barnard St., on Saturday, February 20, 4 p.m.
