Science and History Intersect in Lecture on Preserving Family Recipes

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, February 1st, 2016

The Learning Center of Senior Citizens, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people age successfully, presents a public lecture by Valerie Frey on Monday, February 8 at Skidaway Island Presbyterian Church, 50 Diamond Causeway. A wine and cheese reception begins at 5 p.m., followed by the one-hour lecture beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The title of the lecture is “Preserving Family Recipes: Retrieving Historic Food Ways.” In her talk, Ms. Frey not only offers practical advice such as storing recipes outside the kitchen and away from boiling water and open flames; she also delves deeply into family and regional food ways and the temperamental paths by which recipes move generationally. In a fascinating exploration of “food anthropology,” Frey reveals alchemical methods for resurrecting dishes whose recipes and creators are long gone.

Valerie Frey is the author of Preserving Family Recipes. Copies of the speaker’s book will be available for purchase at the lecture. Admission is $15 for Learning Center members and $20 for visitors.
