Stealth Event Website The Wall Launches in Okatie, SC

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Wednesday, February 10th, 2016

If you are looking for something to do next weekend, a new website launched that may be able to help - TheWall.Events. The Wall was quietly rolled out just over one month ago and has become a go-to digital destination for happenings in Bluffton, and neighboring Hilton Head Island, Beaufort, and Savannah.

The Wall began as the idea of a small group of Bluffton and Hilton Head-based business people who wanted to promote Bluffton events and music. One innovator enjoyed playing music on the weekends and found it difficult to get the word out about his band’s gigs. Another, John Burton, has been closely involved with major local festivals like the Taste of Bluffton, and Bluffton Boiled Peanut Festival since their inception. His frustration stemmed at the plethora of resources that featured just a few local events, but not all of them.

“It is not hard to see why these limitations exist,” commented contributor Nathan Hohsfield. “Local publications do not have staff to comb the internet looking for interesting events. That’s not part of their charter. By contrast, that’s the specific function of The Wall.”

One month after going live, The Wall enjoys contributions from more than a half dozen dedicated individuals. “At this point, we have two people whose job it is to find interesting events, and put them on our calendar” said Joe Nehila. “A team of graphic designers also routinely creates unique artwork for events we believe need special attention throughout the year. We have received dozens of submissions since launch. It’s been remarkable.”

The Wall is comprised of a few primary pages. The home page is organized like a poster wall, the same sort of wall one may have found at a community center or billboard in yesteryear. Events are curated and selected for inclusion on that page, and each listing includes detailed information. That is where the site gets its name.

Erika Nouri, another contributor who calls Savannah home, added, “I wish we could create a cool poster for every event. If we did though, we are talking about hundreds of posters to scroll through. That really isn’t feasible. That’s why we have the calendar.”

A calendar of local events is included with a variety of search features. The website developers, a team from local marketing and technology company Nosoco, indicated calendar search is an area of expected further development. “This project was 100% bootstrapped. No big investment, no major capital. Our expectation is we are going to work out some kinks, and a specific area of focus is an increasingly simpler user interface to compliment the growing number of entries” said lead web developer Logan Bertram.

“The reception the website has received is excellent. We are taking all feedback, from local business owners, event organizers, and most importantly users, very seriously,” added Burton. “Our greatest accomplishment at present is providing a comfortable, responsive experience for every visitor on computer, tablet, or mobile device. When you got the site, it looks good and works great.”

Finally, there is a ‘news’ section which is a blog. The team is selecting activities they believe will be the most fun over every weekend, and soon each week and month to highlight via the news page, a Facebook page, and later a dedicated email. The group behind The Wall said the email list will never be sold, and that users can expect just one email per week with a list of carefully selected events. They say this approach will generate a shared trust in the content and result in happier recipients.
