Savannah State University will recognize more than 2000 students for academic excellence on Thursday, March 24, 10 a.m., in Tiger Arena. The annual Honors Convocation highlights the achievements of SSU students. The top students of each college – sciences and technology, liberal arts and social sciences, business administration – will speak to their peers.

Blessing Enya is a senior with a dual major in biology and mathematics. Originally from Nigeria, she completed her high school education at Lakeside High School in Atlanta, Ga. While at Savannah State University, she conducted her first undergraduate STEM research under her mathematics professor, Hyounkyun Oh, Ph.D., on “Historical Trends and Prediction of Savannah’s Temperature.” She was given an award for Best Presentation at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students at San Antonio, Texas, in 2014. Her goal is to get her M.D. / Ph.D. in microbiology.

Richard Walls, from Springfield, Ga., is a junior majoring in mass communications with a concentration in online journalism. He is a member of Golden Key Honor Society and is a candidate for the National Society of Leadership and Success. He is a member of the student chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, a writer for the student newspaper and a site coordinator for Upward Bound, an after-school program for students in grades 9-12, where he is responsible for providing mentoring and academic reinforcement. Walls plans to become a technical writer and to pursue a Ph.D.

Ahkanyala Jordan is a native of Fort Valley, Ga., who graduated from Peach County High School. Now a senior business management major, she joined the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma Pi and the National Council of Negro Women. She is currently still active in both and now serves as the president for Delta Sigma Pi. Jordan works as a benefits and compensation intern in the human resources department at Memorial Health. After graduation, Jordan will pursue an MBA with a Human Resource Leadership concentration in order to become a human resource manager.

Also recognized during the convocation will be Daniel Meis, a senior biology major. Meis was chosen as an outstanding scholar by the University System of Georgia Board of Regents. He has been recognized for his individual academic achievement by USG Chancellor Henry “Hank” Huckaby. During his time at SSU, Meis worked on the NASA project for SpaceX ISS-UR1, and volunteered with oncology outpatients and in community clinics. Originally from Toronto, Meis graduates in May and is currently applying to medical schools.
