Two schools, Marshpoint Elementary and Hesse K-8 School, tied for first place in the Elementary Science Olympiad 2016, a regional competition for students in the three-county area of Chatham, Effingham, and Liberty Counties. May Howard Elementary came in second. The top two teams will advance to the state competition at Kennesaw State University May 14, 2016, where the top 65 teams in the state will compete to advance to nationals.

More than 150 students competed in Science Olympiad Division A last Saturday at the Georgia Tech-Savannah campus. ESO entered its fourth year with 16 hands-on events for students in grade 3 to 5.

“Georgia Tech-Savannah is honored to host this event for a third year in a row,” said Carolyn Perry, program director for Georgia Tech’s Center for Education Integrating Science, Mathematics, and Computing. “By combining creativity with hands-on experiences and explorations, children learn more fully and deeply. I believe it is extremely important to introduce kids to STEM concepts at an early age.”
