Registration Open for Miles for Meals 5k Run/Walk May 21st

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, April 26th, 2016

Senior Citizens, Inc., a local nonprofit agency dedicated to helping people age successfully, will host its 6th annual Miles for Meals 5k Run/Walk at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016 at Daffin Park. One hundred percent of the proceeds will benefit SCI’s Meals on Wheels program, which provides a hot, nutritious meal to seniors throughout coastal Georgia.

Run, walk, or race with “celebrity” veggies for a morning filled with fun and fitness for the entire family and leave knowing you have made a difference in the lives of seniors in your community. Participants are encouraged to wear vegetable, fruit, or other food-related costumes or hats.

The 5k Run/Walk begins at Daffin Park East Mall and passes through Police Memorial Trail before ending in front of Grayson Stadium. Food, drinks, and awards will be given out after the race.

Currently, SCI prepares and delivers more than 9,000 meals each week in Chatham, Effingham, Bryan and Liberty counties. Many times, the Meals on Wheels volunteer or staff driver is the only person a senior will see in an entire day or even a week. It takes just $6 a day to provide a hot, nutritious meal to a homebound senior, yet more than 600 seniors, at or below the federal poverty line, await nutrition support in Chatham County alone! Georgia ranks number six among Meals on Wheels America's “Top Ten Hunger States,” with nearly one in twelve seniors in Georgia being at risk of hunger.
