Armstrong State University recently hired Tobe R. Frierson as the director of admissions. A veteran admissions expert, Frierson brings more than 13 years of experience in college recruitment management and student services at higher education institutions. In her new role, Frierson is responsible for the strategy, execution and management of Armstrong’s admissions and recruitment process.

Before joining Armstrong, Frierson served as the director of admissions at Erskine College in Due West, S.C., where she implemented a merger between the Office of Undergraduate Admissions and the Office of Seminary Admissions, created an enrollment management team with senior staff and faculty members, was appointed to the president’s senior team and participated frequently in college campus fairs and recruitment events. Under Frierson’s hands-on management, the college experienced annual enrollment gains and, in 2015, enrolled the largest new student class in 40 years.
 
Prior to that role, Frierson worked in various capacities at Erskine College, including associate admissions director, resident director and adjunct professor, in which she taught college success skills to first-year students. At Erskine and Anderson University she also served as an admissions counselor.
 
In addition, Frierson completed the South Carolina Leadership Development Forum for Women in Higher Education and served as an advisor to the academic committee of the Erskine Board of Trustees, as well as a member of the Strategic Planning Review Committee. She sat on the university’s THRIVE committee on Human Restoration, served as a college advisor to the Association of Multicultural Students and acted as the coordinator of the Erskine College Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration. A talented musician, she was also the founder and director of the Erskine College Gospel Choir.
 
Originally from Sumter, S.C., Frierson earned a M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration from Columbia College and a B.S. in Music Education from Erskine College.
