City of Richmond Hill Featured in Georgia Travel Guide

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

The state’s official tourism guide, Georgia Travel Guide, recognized two Richmond Hill locations in the 2016 issue: Fort McAllister Marina and Henry Ford’s Barbershop. Fort McAllister Marina was featured as the coast’s #1 “Get the Shot, Amazing Local Photo Op,” and the barbershop was named the coast’s “Secret Landmark.”

“Our Richmond Hill community knows how special this place is, but it is an honor to be recognized by the state,” said Christy Sherman, executive director of the Richmond Hill Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We want to increase tourism and being featured in the state’s official tourism guide is a step in the right direction, so we could not be happier about that.”

In 1938, Henry Ford walked into 29-year-old Bailey Carpenter’s barbershop requesting a haircut and a shave. He was so satisfied with the results, he paid Carpenter more than he was asked and then offered to relocate the barbershop closer for his convenience with rent free of charge. Ford fixed up the place with all new accessories and received haircuts from Carpenter every week. The barbershop is now located on the grounds of the Richmond Hill History Museum.

Fort McAllister Marina has been in Richmond Hill for 30 years, with renovations that occurred in 2008. It has the largest fixed boat hoist in the state of Georgia and has award-winning restaurant, Fish Tales, located right next to it.
