More than 200 employees of Gulfstream Aerospace Corp. recently joined together with KaBOOM!, a national nonprofit organization, to build a community playground at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center in Savannah. The playground, designed entirely from children’s sketches, was built in just two days (June 4 and 5). The space will serve more than 650 area children.

“It’s always really special to see our employees out lending a hand for the kids who live in the Savannah community,” said Mark Burns, president, Gulfstream. “We like to look for hometown projects to support — the employees love helping, and you can’t go wrong with a project that gives kids a safe place to stay active.

“We’re involved in many charities and community events because we believe it’s important to give back to the communities where our employees live and work.”

KaBOOM!, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit, provides underserved communities with accessible play areas. Its mission is to ensure that children have a safe place to get the recommended 60 minutes of physical activity or active play per day.

KaBOOM! has completed more than 16,300 playground builds with the help of over a million volunteers and has served more than 8 million kids.

The Savannah build began early Sunday morning and saw Gulfstream employees set right to the tasks of assembling parts, moving mulch, mixing concrete, building benches and landscaping.

The playground includes three major sections: a jungle gym, summit climber and rock-climbing wall.

The Salvation Army Georgia division in 2015 provided aid to a total of 2,405,844 people. In addition to the new play space, The Salvation Army Savannah Corps Community Center offers emergency shelter, drug/alcohol abuse rehabilitation, clothing and food assistance, disaster relief services, after-school tutoring and a creative and performing arts program.
