Sterling Rides Volunteer Chalks Up 100 Rides at Senior Citizens, Inc.

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

David Lebos, a Savannah resident and volunteer for the Sterling Rides program at Senior Citizens, Inc., recently celebrated a milestone of providing more than 100 rides to area seniors. The Sterling Rides program pairs volunteers with seniors who are without transportation and in need of assistance getting to and from medical appointments, the grocery store, pharmacy, or other personal errands.

Lebos has been driving for Sterling Rides for three and a half years, and enjoys meeting and spending time with the seniors he’s been able to help. He has developed a special relationship with one client, Ms. Fran Hohenstein. Each Wednesday, Lebos picks up Ms. Hohenstein at her home and they go out for lunch, followed by a trip to Publix at Twelve Oaks. As Ms. Hohenstein cruises the grocery aisles in her motorized cart, Lebos is able to assist her by getting items she can’t reach, opening doors to the refrigerated cases, and talking over the choices.

“The number one reason that seniors have to leave their homes is lack of transportation,” said SCI President Patti Lyons. “You can help a senior keep living at home by becoming a Sterling Rides driver. The hours are flexible and SCI provides specialized training and a small gas stipend. It’s a wonderful opportunity to give back to your community and especially to those who need help the most.”

The Sterling Rides program is looking for more volunteer drivers as there is a waiting list for older adults who need transportation. Those interested in becoming a Sterling Rides driver can call Director of Volunteers Lily McCormick at (912) 236-0363 x143.
