Crime continues to take center stage in Savannah and Chatham County District Attorney Meg Heap will address this and other issues at the Savannah Downtown Business Association’s Wednesday, July 13, luncheon. Recent reports show that the increase in crime the first half of this year is compounded by the fact that 86 of the 89 parolees released by the State of Georgia in January have already been re-arrested for committing crime in Chatham County.  The D.A.’s office and law enforcement have been focused on these issues as well as the End Gun Violence Initiative and other efforts.

At the SDBA Luncheon, Heap’s talk will include an update on possible solutions to combat crime and the Family Resource Center. Networking begins at 11:30AM and lunch is at 12PM at the Charles Morris Center in Trustees Garden, 10 East Broad Street. If registered prior to the July 8 deadline, cost is $25 for SDBA members, $35 for non-members and $10 for elected officials.

Heap has served as District Attorney since 2013 and was elected in 2012. Her previous experience includes serving as Chatham County’s Chief Assistant D.A. as well as work in the Cherokee County D.A.’s office. Over the years she has handled Superior Court cases such as child molestation, murder and a variety of felony cases.  In 2005, Heap became the first prosecutor in Georgia to be assigned to handle elder and disabled adult abuse cases.

Her lifelong passion of working with crime victims and senior citizens began when she was a Volunteer Coordinator and Victim Advocate with the Victim-Witness Assistance Program. A native of Savannah, Heap graduated from St. Vincent’s Academy, earning her B.A. degree from Georgia Southern University and Juris Doctorate from Mercer University.
