SCI Celebrates Summer Angels Student Volunteers with Recognition Ceremony

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, July 29th, 2016

SCI recently held a special reception to honor its Summer Angels, students from local schools who volunteered their time over the summer to work with area seniors. Mayor Eddie DeLoach joined in the celebration and presented the students with a commemorative letter honoring their dedication to serving the Savannah community’s older adults.

The Summer Angels program of SCI, in its 11th year, matches middle-school students with seniors at various levels of need and in a variety of situations. The program helps meet the needs of seniors and provides a life-changing experience for the kids. This summer, under the supervision of Catherine Richie, a teacher at Blessed Sacrament School, 24 students provided more than 1,000 hours of assistance.

Over the summer, students delivered meals to Meals on Wheels recipients, played games and made crafts with seniors at adult daytime care centers and neighborhood centers, raked and cleared yards for seniors, assembled fans for SCI’s fan drive, washed SCI delivery vehicles, and helped with a wheelchair parade at Williams Court Apartments.
