Thursday, August 4th, 2016

Telfair Museums celebrates 100 years of art instruction in Savannah’s public schools with an exhibition of work by current elementary, middle, and high school visual art teachers working in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools System.   Works by approximately 20 teachers, nearly one-third of all SCCPSS art teachers, will be on view. Mediums include drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics and mixed media. The exhibition runs August 5 – 28, 2016, with a closing reception Friday August 26, 4 – 6pm.

Lila Cabaniss, an artist, teacher, co-founder of the Savannah Art Club and Telfair Museums supporter, initiated the first art classes in the public schools system in 1915. She became the school district’s first full-time art teacher in 1927. She was also the first to organize school field trips to Telfair, an education program that endures today and benefits thousands of Savannah students each year with free 4th grade field trips.
