Shannon Miller, one of the most decorated Olympic gymnasts in American history and an ovarian cancer survivor, will be the featured speaker at the annual fundraising luncheon for the Curtis and Elizabeth Anderson Cancer Institute at Memorial University Medical Center. “The ACI Luncheon: A Gold Medal Event” will be held Thursday, December 8, 2016, at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center. The event will also honor grateful patients Mike Cashwell, Gary Exley, Libby Malphrus, and Vivian Palefsky.

The day’s activities will begin with a VIP reception and book signing starting at 10 a.m., at which Miller will sign copies of her book, “It’s Not About Perfect: Competing for My Country and Fighting for My Life.” The luncheon follows at 11:30 a.m. VIP combination tickets for both events are available for $150. Shannon Miller counts seven Olympic medals among the 59 international and 49 national competition medals she holds in gymnastics. The most golden hours of her Olympic career came at the 1996 games, where she led the “Magnificent Seven” to the first-ever team gold medal for U.S. women, and captured individual gold on the balance beam.

College and then law school followed her retirement from Olympic competition, and she went on to found her own business focusing on women’s health. But the biggest challenge of her life came in 2011 when she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Thanks to surgery and an aggressive chemotherapy regimen, she is cancer-free today.
