Coastal Heritage Society Presents the Battlefield Memorial March Oct. 9th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, September 20th, 2016

On Sunday, October 9th Coastal Heritage Society will honor the soldiers that fought during the 1779 Battle of Savannah, one the most significant conflicts in our city’s Revolutionary War history.

The Battlefield Memorial March will lead guests through the footsteps of soldiers who fought on that historic day in 1779, in celebration of the 237th anniversary. The March begins promptly at 7 am. All March participants will meet in the Savannah History Museum parking lot at 6:45 am. Afterwards a wreath laying and remembrance ceremony will be held.

“There is something special about being on this ground at dawn and walking up the path at the same hour on the same day that these soldiers fought here,” said Emily Beck, Manager of Interpretation of Coastal Heritage Society. “That is what makes the Battlefield Memorial March such a meaningful experience.”

This year we will also unveil three new stones featuring the compelling story of Scottish brothers Alexander and Charles MacDonald, who fought as opponents in separate armies during the October 9, 1779 battle.

Raised together in exile in France, both brothers chose military careers; Alexander fought for the Kingdom of Great Britain, while his younger brother Charles served as an aide de camp for the famed French Count d'Estaing, assisting Americans in their assault against the British defenses at Savannah. Only after the October 9th battle ̶ one of the bloodiest single hours of the Revolution ̶ were Alexander and Charles permitted to greet one another as brothers after years of separation.

This event is free and open to the public. Light breakfast refreshments and coffee will be served for attendees following the ceremony.
