YMCA to Host 27th Annual Heart of Savannah 5K September 24th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, September 12th, 2016

The YMCA of Coastal Georgia will host the 27th Annual Heart of Savannah Race on September 24, 2016 at Forsyth Park. We welcome runners, walkers and joggers of all ages to join us for a fun-filled morning in beautiful downtown Savannah.

In addition to the timed 5K race, the Heart of Savannah event features a free ¼ mile Kids Run and a 1 mile Survivor walk. Participants are encouraged to join us in Forsyth Park following the race for a family friendly post race party featuring vendors, games, activities and live music.

All proceeds raised from this year’s race will benefit LIVESTRONG at the YMCA. This evidence based program focuses on building the mental and physical strength of cancer survivors. Participants work with trained fitness professionals in small groups to reclaim their health, self-confidence and strength during or following a cancer diagnosis. The 12-week program is offered at no cost to participants and provides a safe, comfortable space for Survivors to thrive. The YMCA of Coastal Georgia has offered the program since 2015 for over 30 participants.

“Since we began the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program in 2015, we have focused on providing our participants with a welcoming and supportive environment,” says Dede Roberts, Resource Director of Healthy Living at the YMCA of Coastal Georgia.  “Each group really forms a bond and they continue to lean on one other for support long after the program.”
