Asbury Memorial UMC Reschedules 'The Sound of Music' Worship Service November 13th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, November 11th, 2016

Asbury Memorial Church has rescheduled The Sound of Music worship service, part of the popular God on Broadway series, which was postponed due to Hurricane Matthew. The special worship service, which was previously scheduled for Oct. 9, will now be held at 11:15 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13, 2016 at Asbury, 1008 Henry St.

The God on Broadway series combines sermons with Broadway musical themes featuring songs from the musicals in celebration of God’s Word. The vibrant Asbury Memorial choir performs selections from Broadway musicals under the direction of Minister of Music, Ray Ellis. Rev. Pastor Billy Hester offers stimulating, and frequently amusing, sermons that blend themes from the musicals and biblical texts.  To date Phantom of The Opera, Hello Dolly and Cats have taken place with Peter Pan scheduled for Oct. 30.

“Our congregation looks forward to God on Broadway every year, and it always attracts other community members who might not attend a more traditional church service,” Hester said. “Hurricane Matthew put us in a difficult spot, and even though our church came through the storm without much damage, we had to cancel The Sound of Music as it was scheduled for the Sunday when the evacuation was still standing and the cast involves many children. We wanted to give potential attendees a chance to attend to personal business and get their lives back in order. Now we hope everyone will be able to join us on Nov. 13.  We also extend an invitation to all to join us on All Saints Sunday on Nov. 6.”

The pastor and his wife, Cheri, have acting experience from both on and off Broadway, and they love using their talents and their former careers to enhance the worship experience. God on Broadway has been a mainstay at the church since 2005 and, each year, it draws sizable audiences who appreciate the innovative approach to sharing the Gospel and Christ’s love.

This series is free and open to the public.
