Savannah Philharmonic's Musique de France November 19th

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, November 15th, 2016

Join the Savannah Philharmonic as they pay homage to the beautiful music the French have given the world on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2016. “Musique de France” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. at the Lucas Theatre for the Arts, 32 Abercorn St.

With opulent works by 19th and 20th century French composers Berlioz, Debussy, Poulenc and Ravel, this performance will enrapture the mind and ensnare the imagination. “Musique de France” will include Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture, Debussy’s “Afternoon of a Faun”, Ravel’s Rapsodie espagnole, and the inspirational and popular Boléro as the climax to the evening.

“We haven’t played much French music in recent times, but I think this concert will make up for that! In the music of Ravel and Debussy, the impressionistic landscapes and figures appear and disappear before our eyes, with some of the most magical orchestral writing in the symphonic repertoire,” Savannah Philharmonic Artistic Director and Conductor Peter Shannon said. “It’s not all haziness and subtlety though: Poulenc’s double piano concerto is a thrilling work, and the ending of Ravel’s Boléro is loud, brash and brilliant! I’m looking forward to another great evening with this fantastic orchestra!”

Philharmonic Executive Director Mitchell Krieger hopes area educational institutions will take advantage of this cultural opportunity.

“We’d love to see students who are taking French in school to come and experience this incredible French music. There will be an education rehearsal on November 18th. We encourage educators to get in touch with the Phil to learn more about this opportunity for your school by emailing [email protected],” Krieger said.

Internationally celebrated pianist Alon Goldstein will join the Savannah Philharmonic’s own Quynh Shannon and the orchestra to perform Poulenc’s witty and melodic Concerto for 2 Pianos in D minor.

Tickets to Musique de France cost $16-$75 and can be purchased at www.savannahboxoffice.com.
