Telfair Museums’ Still Life Exhibition Showcases Innovation in a Traditional Genre

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Objectified: Still Lifes from the Permanent Collection, an exhibition with over 25 works in 12 diverse mediums, will open at Telfair Academy on November 19, 2016. Exploring still life objects from the end of the nineteenth century, Objectified considers the central role that still life has played in art movements.

Still life is generally defined as a work of art that depicts isolated inanimate objects arranged by the artist. Often the objects are commonplace in the domestic sphere, allowing artists more freedom as they work with moderately-sized items that are easily accessible nearby.

“This exhibition considers still lifes from different movements in art, such as Impressionism, Pop Art, and Photorealism, in order to demonstrate how artists constantly transform and reinvent the concept of traditional still life.” said Erin Dunn, Assistant curator at Telfair Museums. Several of the works included in the show are by artists with ties to the Savannah community.

While the basic subject matter of a still life stays the same in each work in Objectified, the depictions differ dramatically in style and medium. Each version of the still life strives to consider the commonplace and every day of the items and objects that fill our lives and invest them with meaning.

This exhibition will complement the concurrent show Face to Face: American Portraits from the Permanent Collection. Objectified will be on view at Telfair Academy through June 11, 2017.
