The Learning Center of SCI will Host Lecture Series on Abolition in America this Winter

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Tuesday, December 20th, 2016

The Learning Center, an education program of Senior Citizens, Inc., will host an eight-part lecture series on Abolition in America this winter on Wednesdays, January 4 through February 22, 2017 from 1:30-2:30 p.m. The program fee is $6 per lecture; $40 for the series. Space is limited, and advance registration is encouraged.

The Learning Center of SCI will explore the story of Abolition in American history with speakers from Armstrong State, Savannah State, and Georgia Southern Universities, along with retired educators and independent scholars. The nuanced history of slavery and freedom in America bounds to life through thoughtful historical analysis and through important figures such as Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton, Frederick Douglass and Harriet Jacobs, John Brown and Abraham Lincoln. Although the series observes a loose chronological order, its component parts are suitable either as a series or as individual lectures.

Also this winter, The Learning Center will also present “Traveling the Underground Railroad,” an eight-week course by Melinda Stein featuring Colson Whitehead’s new book The Underground Railroad: A Novel.
