Monday, December 12th, 2016

For years Lizann Roberts has led a charge to keep Savannah healthy, now she will lead the effort to support and teach women fighting heart disease in our community.

WomenHeart is the area’s first support network for women living with heart disease – the leading cause of death in women. Roberts was one of 39 heart disease survivors who recently graduated from the 15th Annual WomenHeart Science & Leadership Symposium at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

Champions like Roberts use personal knowledge of living with heart disease with the skills learned at the symposium to go out into the community and lead monthly support groups.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women in the United States and more women than men have died from heart disease every year since 1984. Moreover, 42.7 million American women are currently living with some form of cardiovascular disease.

The Heart Hospital at St. Joseph’s/Candler is a member of the WomenHeart National Hospital Alliance, a partnership comprised of hospitals committed to advancing women’s heart health. NHA seeks to ensure that women heart disease patients in every community have access to information, education and patient support services.
