Art Rise Savannah and Planned Parenthood Southeast Partner for First Feminist Exhibition of 2017

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Monday, January 16th, 2017

This year, communities of artists across the United States are generating artwork in celebration of women, racial and sexual equality, marriage equality, gender identity, environmental protection, affordable health care and access to safe and legal abortion. In tandem with this cultural movement, Art Rise Savannah is partnering with Planned Parenthood Southeast to organize its first feminist exhibition of 2017.

The Personal is Political examines the relationship between personal experience and the political structures we navigate in our daily lives. It engages art as a vehicle of civic action, featuring works by national artists committed to investigating identity, freedom and resistance through their practice.

We are now seeking submissions for The Personal is Political, opening March 9th, 2017 with a private fundraising event benefiting Planned Parenthood Southeast. This call is open to artists of all gender identities, racial and economic backgrounds living across the globe. Consideration will be given to all mediums and dimensions. $5 of each submission fee will go to benefit Planned Parenthood Southeast. See FAQ information below for further details.

The Personal is Political will run concurrently with the exhibiting of internationally acclaimed artist and activist Niki Johnson’s latest artwork, Hills & Valleys. Hills & Valleys is a large scale sculptural piece constructed out of the signage from Planned Parenthood health care centers defunded in Wisconsin under their current Governor Scott Walker and his administration. Johnson will be speaking at the opening and will be addressing issues of civic engagement, empowerment, and the vital role in activism during her time in Savannah.

An publicly accessible opening reception will be held on Friday, March 10th from 6-9 pm. The next day, Saturday March 11th, a panel discussion moderated by Jessica Leigh Lebos will be held at 2PM at Art Rise Gallery.

The deadline for submissions is February 19th. For information on how to submit please visit artrisesavannah.org/juried-exhibitions.
