NMA Announces New Pilot Program with Habersham YMCA

Staff Report From Savannah CEO

Friday, January 6th, 2017

The National Movement Alliance is pleased to announce a collaboration with the Habersham YMCA, for the pilot of "Move On!  Music. Rhythm. Movement", which will begin in mid-late January.

NMA Executive Director, Sarah Bernzott, and YMCA of Coastal Georgia’s Resource Director of Healthy Living, Dede Roberts, are excited  about the upcoming launch of GEM's newest program. "The NMA/GEM have worked hard to ensure area residents with movement disorders or disabilities have a variety of exercise choices.  Barely a year ago, the only choice that anyone in our area had was physical or occupational therapy, short term, and independent or directed gym work, long term,” stated Bernzott.  “Today, we have two programs, developed by elite professionals, and based in sound research.”

Move On! will be directed by Pat Alley and Elizabeth Newkirk, who have danced on and off of Broadway, and have been dance and yoga instructors in the Savannah area for many years. Currently, they are both teaching at the Habersham YMCA in a yoga capacity. Pat was recently chosen as a 2016 Stanley J. Wertheimer Fellow, and attended training in the Dance for PD program in Brooklyn, NY.  Elizabeth's training is scheduled for early 2017.  She brings a wealth of knowledge from 500 plus hours of yoga instruction and years of experience modifying dance and yoga to special needs participants.

NMA/GEM is very excited that these ladies have chosen to work with us, helping those with movement disorders and difficulties in the Savannah area.  Their excitement and enthusiasm guarantee success to the NMA's newest program.  Whether you walk on your own, with the help of a walker, or spend most of your time in a wheelchair, these two amazing ladies are ready to help you move more, build core strength, improve balance and coordination and improve muscle flexibility.

While the exact start date for the class has not been determined, a firm start date will be confirmed later in January, with the program launching by early February. The introductory rate for this pilot program is $20 per participant.
